Cast on 40 (48, 56, 64) stitches, and arrange them over 3 double pointed 3mm needles. Place a marker between the first and last stitch in the round. Working in the round, work 10 ( 12, 14, 14) rounds of knit 3 purl 1 rib.
Continue in puzzle pattern for 40 ( 48, 56, 64) rounds, or until the cuff of the sock is as long as you want it to be, stopping at the marker.

Continue in puzzle pattern until the cuff of the sock is as long as you want it to be. Then, stop at the marker, and turn. You will knit the heel flap back and forth, not in the round.
Work the heel flap:
(note : the heel flap is knit with a slip stitch to make it more hard wearing)
- Slip 1, purl 19( 23, 27, 31) then turn;
- (Slip 1, Knit 1) 10( 12, 14, 16) times, then turn;
Repeat steps 1 and 2 for 9( 11, 13, 15) more times, until this heel flap has 20( 24, 28, 32) rows.
Shape the heel:
Continuing on the heel flap,
- Slip 1, purl 11( 13, 15, 17) purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
- Slip 1, knit 5, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
- Slip 1, purl 6, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
- Slip 1, knit 7, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
Continue in this way, i.e. alternating purl and knit rows, and knitting/purling an additional stitch each time, until you have picked up all the stitches from the heel flap. For some sizes you will find that on the last two rows you don’t have enough stitches left to do the knit1/purl1 at the end, and this is fine. You should end with a knitwise row.
Note: it is recommended that when knitting the underside of the foot you knit into the back of each stitch. This will twist the stitch slightly, and make the fabric significantly harder-wearing.
Shape the heel gusset:
Pick up 10( 12, 14, 16) stitches knitwise down side 1 of the heel flap. Place a marker. Knit across the stitches from the cuff, keeping to the puzzle pattern. Place a marker, then pick up 10( 12, 14, 16) stitches knitwise up side 2 of the heel flap.
Now continue with the following 2 rounds, until 40 ( 48, 56, 64) stitches remain:
- Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker; Knit 2 together, then Knit 1.
Slip the first marker, then Knit across the cuff in puzzle pattern, until you reach the second marker. Slip the second marker; Knit 1, S2K2tog, then knit to the end of the round.
- Knit a round, keeping to the puzzle pattern where appropriate.
When 40( 48, 56, 64) stitches remain, continue without decreasing until the sock is the required length, bearing in mind that the toe you will knit will be about 4( 4, 5, 6) cm deep.
Shape the toe:
You will shape the toe by decreasing at both sides of each marker.
- Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1. Slip the first marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the second marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1. Slip the second marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog. Knit to the end of the round.
- Knit a round.
Repeat these 2 rows until 16( 20, 24, 28) stitches remain. Arrange these stitches into 2 sets of 8( 10, 12, 14) so that they will lie flat, with the toe decreases positioned at each end of each needle, then graft the stitches together (see below for how to graft).
Knit another sock the same.
Ready to wear!
Grafting:
Put the sewing needle in the first stitch of the front knitting needle purlways and pull the yarn all the way through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Next put the sewing needle into the first stitch of the back knitting needle knitways and pull all the way through. Again, do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Now:
- Put the sewing needle into the first stitch of the front knitting needle knitways and pull the yarn all the way through. Drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
- Put the sewing needle purlways into the next stitch on the front knitting needle and pull through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
- Put the sewing needle purlways into the first stitch on the back knitting needle and pull through. Drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
- Put the sewing needle into the next stitch on the back knitting needle knitways and pull through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Keeping working through these 4 steps until you have grafted together all the stitches, then break the thread and fasten it off on the inside of the sock.
