Start
You will knit in the round. Cast on 72 (84, 96) stitches using a 4mm diameter, 40cm length circular needle. To adjust sizing further, you can cast on any multiple of 12 stitches and the pattern will still work.
Work 8 (10, 12) rounds of Knit 1, purl 1 rib (K1, P1, repeat to end of round).
Change to a 5mm diameter 40cm length circular needle.
Work an increase round:
*KFB, K1, repeat from * to end of round.
You will now have 108 (126, 144) stitches.
Feather & Fan Pattern
- Knit one round
- Purl one round
- *(K2tog) 3 times, (YF, K1) 6 times, (K2tog) 3 times; repeat from * to the end of the round
- Knit one round.
Continue in Feather & Fan pattern until the total depth of the beret is 9 inches, ending with a round 2. Note: you can make the beret deeper or shallower than 8 inches depending on whether you would like it to be a more, or less, slouchy beret: the deeper it is, the slouchier it will be.
Finishing off the beret
When the beret is as deep as you want it to be, finish the top as follows:
- *K2tog, K2tog, K2tog, K6, K2tog, K2tog, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
- Purl one round.
- *K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
- knit one round.
- *K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Break the thread and thread it back through the remaining stitches and gather them together.
Secure, and wear!
