FREE ZEBEDEE SOCKS KNITTING PATTERN

Materials: 100g of variegated sock yarn; a set of double pointed 2.5mm needles.

Glossary:

  • dpsso = slip 2 stitches knitwise from left to right needle, knit 1, then pass the 2 slipped stitches over, thus decreasing by 2 stitches.
  • s2k2tog = slip 2 stitches knitwise from left to right needle, then knit those 2 stitches together.

Sizes: (1) for small child (2) for small adult/large child, (3) for medium adult, and (4) for large width feet.

Start:

Cast on 52 (60, 68, 76) stitches, and arrange them over a set of three double pointed 2.5mm needles. Place a marker between the first and last stitches in the round.

Work 1 round of purl. Then, continue in Z pattern as follows:

The Z pattern:

  1. Round 1 - Knit 1 round.
  2. Round 2 - **Knit into front and back of stitch (making a stitch) ; Knit 4 (5, 6, 7) ; dpsso ; Knit 4 (5, 6, 7) ; Knit into front and back of stitch (making a stitch) **. Repeat from ** to ** 3 more times.
Repeat these 2 rounds 22 (26, 30, 34) times, or until the cuff of the sock is the size you want it to be, stopping at the marker.

Divide for the heel flap:
The heel flap will be plain, so as we divide for the heel flap, we also lose the extra stitches that were needed to get the tension right in the patterned area:

Knit 5 (6, 7, 8) ; dpsso ; knit 10 ( 12, 14, 16); dpsso ; knit 5 (6, 7, 8) . Then, turn.

Having turned, proceed as follows:

  1. Slip 1 stitch, purl 21 (25, 29, 33) then turn;
  2. (Slip 1 stitch, knit 1) repeat to end of heel flap, then turn;
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for 10 (12, 14, 16) more times, until the heel flap has 22 (26, 30, 34) rows.

Shape the heel:

Continuing on the heel flap,

  1. Slip 1 stitch, purl 12 (14, 16, 18) purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  2. Slip 1 stitch, knit 5, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
  3. Slip 1 stitch, purl 6, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  4. Slip 1 stitch, knit 7, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
  5. Slip 1 stitch, purl 8, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  6. Slip 1 stitch, knit 9, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
Continue in this way until you have picked up all the stitches from the heel flap.

You will have 14 (16, 18, 20) stitches left on the heel flap.

Shape the heel gusset:

  1. Pick up 11 (13, 15, 17) stitches knitwise down side 1 of the heel flap. Place a marker.
  2. Knit across the 26 (30, 34, 38) stitches from the cuff, continuing in the Z pattern described above.
  3. Place a marker, then pick up 11 (13, 15, 17) stitches knitwise up side 2 of the heel flap.
You should have 82 stitches. Now continue with the following 2 rounds, until 48 (56, 64, 72) stitches remain:
  1. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1.
    Slip the first marker, then Knit across the Z patterned area, keeping to the Z pattern described above, until you reach the second marker.
    Slip the second marker, then Knit 1, S2K2tog, then knit to the end of the round.

  2. Knit a round, keeping to the Z pattern through the patterned area.
When you have 48 (56, 64, 72) stitches remaining, continue without decreasing until the sock is the length you require, bearing in mind that the toe you knit will be about 5cm in depth; see the Violet Green customized sock pattern generator to find out exactly how many rounds to knit at this point to fit a particular foot size.

Before starting to shape the toe, knit one more round, during which you should decrease by 4 stitches inside the Z pattern area, to get the tension right as you switch to from Z to stocking stitch, as follows:

Knit 5 (6, 7, 8) ; dpsso ; knit 10 ( 12, 14, 16); dpsso ; knit 5 (6, 7, 8) . Then, turn.

There will be 22 (26, 30, 34) stitches left inside the Z area, and 44 (52, 60, 68) stitches in total.

Shape the toe:

You will shape the toe by decreasing at both sides of the place where the Z pattern and the plain knitting meet. Stop the Z pattern now, and knit all rounds.

  1. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1.
    Slip the first marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the second marker, then Knit 2 together, Knit 1.
    Slip the second marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog.
    Knit to the end of the round.

  2. Knit a round.
Repeat these 2 rows until 16 (20, 24, 28) stitches remain. Arrange these 16 (20, 24, 28) stitches into 2 sets of 8 (10, 12, 14) , so that they will lie flat, ensuring that the hanging thread is at the back-right hand side, then graft the stitches together.

Ready to wear!

Grafting:
Put the sewing needle in the first stitch of the front knitting needle purlways and pull the yarn all the way through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Next put the sewing needle into the first stitch of the back knitting needle knitways and pull all the way through. Again, do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.

** Now put the sewing needle into the first stitch of the front knitting needle knitways and pull the yarn all the way through. Drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle purlways into the next stitch on the front knitting needle and pull through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle purlways into the first stitch on the back knitting needle and pull through. Drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle into the next stitch on the back knitting needle knitways and pull through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.

Rep from ** to the end of the row, then fasten off the thread.
